What is modern lip micropigmentation?

The modern interpretation of lip micropigmentation is radically different from the procedure of the 1990s. Permanent lip makeup is performed with a special device, and the needle introduces the pigment into the upper layers of the skin, to a depth of no more than 0.8 mm. The pigments used are created specifically for permanent makeup, having a light structure, natural compounds and good adhesion.

Modern micropigmentation includes several techniques, each having its own advantages and offering different effects.

Lip micropigmentation with shading

It is an immortal classic, the one with which the lip micropigmentation service began. It can be done with contour and shading or without contour. The difference lies in the pigments used and their shades; in general, natural and soft shades are preferred for a well-groomed appearance.

Lip micropigmentation with shading is an ideal option for those who want to hide any imperfections, adjust the shape of the lips and give them a fuller visual appearance. This technique emphasizes the lips, giving them a vibrant and fresh look.

The 3D technique in lip micropigmentation

This technique involves combining pigments to create volume. From a practical point of view, it does not differ significantly from an ordinary tattoo and is more of a marketing concept. Nevertheless, it is considered a distinct technique, being performed with several shades. The 3D technique focuses on volume, but can also help conceal minor imperfections.

Micropigmentation in the watercolor technique

It is the most requested technique, chosen by the majority of women. The watercolor technique is not meant to hide imperfections, but it remains at the top thanks to its extremely natural and authentic look. The pigment shades are mainly in nude, light, pastel and delicate tones.

The result of this technique allows for juicy, slightly voluminous lips to be achieved. They do not draw excessive attention to the face, but at the same time they look fresh. The effect is not difficult to maintain and does not require the excessive application of makeup.

PROS and CONS — lip micropigmentation

Arguments in favor

  • The procedure completely replaces decorative makeup: lip liner and lipstick will no longer be needed, since the lips always stay colored.
  • After the procedure a minimum of care is required, over a period that does not exceed one week.
  • Micropigmentation corrects the shape well, changing it visually and concealing imperfections; it is considered the safest way to change the appearance of your lips.
  • The skin heals quickly, within 3–5 days, thanks to the superficial introduction of the pigment.

Arguments against

  • The procedure requires professionalism: it is crucial to turn to a skilled master.
  • There is a probability of herpes appearing after the procedure. Micropigmentation is not the cause, but it can be a triggering factor.
  • Swelling is possible after the procedure, but, if it is performed correctly, it will disappear within a few hours.

The professionalism of the master is essential. Equally important is the level of the studio where the procedure is performed: the quality of the anesthetic, of the pigment, of the equipment, the level of hygiene and the choice of the pigment shade are all significant aspects.

Lip micropigmentation has certain contraindications, standard for all types of permanent makeup: oncological conditions, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, AIDS, HIV, epilepsy and blood clotting disorders. As for the tattoo itself, the contraindication is present in the case of progressive herpes on the lips.

How is lip micropigmentation performed?

The principle of the procedure is the same regardless of the chosen technique; the only different aspect is the development of the sketch. Before applying the contour, the master draws it preliminarily with a pencil and, after the shape and color are approved, begins working with the micropigmentation device to fix the contour. Then the shading is created using the “scratching” method, and the pigment is introduced superficially.

At the end of the procedure, advice is provided regarding skin care and preventive measures.

The procedure can cause a little discomfort, which is why it is always performed with the application of an anesthetic gel, which reduces painful sensations to a minimum. An advantage is that working with the micropigmentation device takes no more than 1.5 hours.

The period of healing and skin recovery after the procedure is approximately 25–28 days. Approximately 5 days are dedicated to the complete healing of the skin, and the rest of the time to its recovery and the settling of the pigment.

In the first 2 days, the shade will be more intense due to the lymph that is released in the first 24 hours. Starting on day 3, peeling appears; between day 5 and day 7, the peeling disappears, and the shade of the lips becomes lighter and more natural.

If you know that you have herpes in your body, take antiviral medication 2–3 days before and 2–3 days after the procedure. These prevent the infection from manifesting and do not affect the result. Important: the procedure is prohibited if herpes is already present.

Is lip micropigmentation worth it?

It is definitely worth it if you want to enjoy a beautiful lip shade without using lipstick, gloss or liner. Lip micropigmentation can effectively cover blue tones, visually corrects asymmetry and gives the lips a fuller appearance. However, all these advantages are achieved only by strictly following the preparation rules, the post-procedure care, and by choosing a skilled professional.
